While Maine's coast gets most of the attention, inland river towns like Skowhegan offer a different rhythm: historic buildings, working farms, a strong arts community, and local businesses that are still independently run. Start where old stories find new readers. Bookish is a small, curated used bookstore in a historic downtown building. The books are hand-picked, so the selection changes every time we open, and you will find Skowhegan-themed treats and totes alongside the books. We share the building with CSN Press, the folks behind Comic Shop News®, so if you see a hanging blue "CSN" sign, you have found us.
42 Court Street
Housed in the former Somerset County Jail, The Miller's Table serves farm-to-table food, bread, and pastries made with freshly milled whole grains from the surrounding region. It is one of the most distinctive places to eat in central Maine, and a natural first stop for breakfast or lunch before a walk downtown.
151 Water Street
A small, unpretentious wine bar with a simple philosophy: drink casually but classily. Unwined serves beer, wine, cocktails, and bar snacks, and dogs are welcome. Outside food is welcome too, which means you can carry in a meal from nearby restaurants and make an evening of it.
Along the Kennebec
Skowhegan sits on the Kennebec River, and the River Walk is the best way to feel the town's connection to it. The path links downtown to the waterfront, with views of the historic bridge, the swinging bridge, and Bernard Langlais sculptures along the way. It is an easy, low-stress walk that works in any season.
Downtown Skowhegan
Bernard Langlais, the internationally known Maine artist, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture graduate, has a number of large-scale wooden sculptures scattered throughout the area. Skowhegan's downtown pieces are a free, open-air gallery and a good reason to wander slowly. Look for the Skowhegan Indian, a local landmark recreated in the original artist's style.

Skowhegan is an agricultural hub at heart. The farmers' market brings together growers, bakers, and makers from the surrounding Kennebec Valley. It is a great place to assemble a picnic, find a gift, or simply see what the region is growing this week.
